The SSM! Home Theater #3: Variable Geo

VG: The martial arts tournament that determines who is the toughest waitress of all.
The winner receives ten million dollars and a piece of premium real estate.
The goddesses, beautiful and powerful, approach the field of battle!

If you could get past the absurd opening spiel (and the WordArt-looking logo) about fighting waitresses
then this anime is for you.

Variable Geo is more Street Fighter than actual Street Fighter.
The waitresses can and will have televised fights anytime and anywhere
provided they have their pocket VG thingamajig.
The winner gets to bask in the glory of victory while the loser has to strip naked
or masturbate in public.
It sounds absolutely absurd but it is what it is.
And I love it!

It's only 3 episodes but 3 episodes of very effective story-telling.

Heck, even the side characters are bubbly, charming, and memorable.

You are also to buy in on the whole Yuka-Satomi friendship angle.

So much so that you'd care about Satomi's eventual heel turn.

There were a few characters you wouldn't like or care about at first.
But the story does plant enough seeds/backstory for you to somewhat care about them eventually.

You also have your usual cast of smart soccer moms,

ninjas

and bunny girls.

And dem bunny girls alone are more than enough to make you stay for the show!

Fan service was also everywhere in this series,

but not distracting/obnoxious enough that it makes you disinterested with the show.
There were a few Fatal Fury-styled energy blasts as well
but nothing too fancy or DBZ-like.

Jun Kubota was our main girl for this series.

We just wish she wasn't defeated that easily

and that she had more one-on-one fight scenes.

This OVA was released in 1996.
Probably to promote the Playstation game entitled Advanced V.G. 2.

which was coincidentally released in that same year.
The animation and art style looked very good and every paused scene was a guaranteed masterpiece.

Just don't make the mistake of watching the wrong anime of a somewhat similar name entitled Variable Geo Neo:The Animation (2004
by Milky Animation Label .

which was a downright hentai from start to finish.

Filled with bad character designs

and a generic arena setting.

Didn't care enough to watch a single episode of it.
The differences were crystal clear!

Avoid VGN at all costs!
